GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY:

Development of new and improved foil stamping, transfer and lamination products. NATURE AND SCOPE:

The R&D Manager interfaces with other functions within the division/organization to achieve results. Working alone or leading and directing a team, successfully formulates complex chemistries and performs product development from concept to commercialization.

The R&D Manager requires primary knowledge of coating formulations, developing new coatings with a thorough understanding of coating technologies and technical expertise in the thin film coating industry. The incumbent understands customer’s manufacturing processes and end product usage to achieve best quality.

The R&D Manager assists Product Management in analyzing opportunities for growth by conducting lab analysis and experiments for new or improved products identified by the Sales/Marketing group and the process of Market Segment Focus, from a customer/market problem or need. The incumbent uses lab and production equipment to make trial runs of new and improved products and completes field trials before they go into production.

The R&D Manager provides expert knowledge, direction and support to direct reports. The incumbent prioritizes projects and communicates effective time utilization for direct reports to ensure success.

The R&D Manager assists other functions on technical matters, including making calls with sales representatives to assist customers with technical problems. The incumbent assists Quality Control and Production with manufacturing problems and decisions pertaining to all products being manufactured.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITES:

1. The R&D Manager primary function is to have a thorough understanding of chemistry, including the development of solvent and water based coatings, accompanied by experience in thin film coating technology, conventional and thermosetting coating technology, and/or adhesive development background. A background in UV curing technology desired.

2. Full development from concept to commercialization of new and innovative products, colors and formulations. Provide detailed information about process control/adjustments to ensure all design and process specifications are met before handing over to the Production staff. Familiarization of Stage Gate processes a plus.

3. Drive the development of innovative and new products by identifying suitable raw materials at a competitive cost. Conduct experiments on existing products and procedures to improve manufacturing processes and to reduce costs.

4. Provide technical support to Production staff as needed to resolve manufacturing issues. Assist engineering, product management, and sales as requested.

5. Ensures success and personal development of direct reports through mentoring and project support.

6. Analyze and test competitor’s products. Review and update existing products so that they meet or exceed the performance characteristics of competitor’s products (benchmarking techniques).

7. Maintain accurate written records of experiments and work related to product reviews or process.

8. Understand his/her responsibilities regarding safety rules and regulations. All safety rules must be followed and all work areas must be kept in a clean and orderly condition.

9. Must be willing to work flexible hours to provide support to key projects, while ensuring an ability to meet deadlines and manage priorities. 10-20% Travel required to other business unit locations and customer sites.

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The primary role of this position is to learn, lead and eventually manage Plant Operations. The successful candidate must have be a chemical engineer with experience in large, complex chemical operations. 2. Fully participate in site SHE initiatives including performing periodic audits, incident investigations and housekeeping inspections.
3. Conduct periodic departmental inspections to assure compliance to existing safety rules and procedures and to assess the effectiveness and need for other risk reduction activities within the departments.
4. Assure all equipment safety inspections and audits are performed and documented.
5. Instill discipline and accountability in execution of Plant Operations - Lead this effort by example.

Job Description

Primary responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: Incorporating FDA, ASTM and ISO standards governing New Product Development and sustaining quality standards/principles (ASTM, ASQ, etc.) into inspection and process control methodologies. Provide authoritative guidance about Six Sigma principles (Sampling, Acceptance Criteria, DOE, Statistical Process Control, Root Cause Analysis, FMEA, control charts, capability analysis) to New Product Development Team. Support supplier audits to ensure supplier capability including reconciliation of inspection methods, and evaluation of proposed vendor changes and sustaining activities. Provide support for the Design History File during 3rd party inspections. Perform hazard and risk analysis for new products and sustaining products, including process. Perform investigations for issues affecting product quality post-launch.

Qualification

Successful candidates for this position have:

*8-12 plus years experience in a Quality Engineering role & FDA regulated environment.

*Specific experience working with Medical Device Implants (i.e., CMF, Spine, Nureo, etc).

*Served as a primary auditor in the past.

*Demonstrate successful application of quality tools including Six Sigma, Lean, and statistics.

*Quality certifications (i.e., ASQ, CQE or CSSBB, etc)

*An independent, self-starter, who can wear lots of hats.

*Ability to use metrology and statistical methods to diagnose and correct improper quality control practices
