This posting is for a Robotic Paint Application Scientist in the Specialty Coatings Technology Division at the R&D headquarters. The selected individual for this position will be responsible for oversight and operation of robotic paint application facility.
Job Responsibilities:
· Provide technical oversight in both the operation and continual capability development of a state-of-the-art robotic coating application lab
· Conduct robotic and manual spray application of coatings in the laboratory to determine optimal settings for application equipment and to assess benefit of coatings additives
· Working with other Scientists and business leaders, coordinate application trials and collaborations with external development partners (customers, co-suppliers, equipment vendors, universities and government organizations)
· Build expertise on common industrial spray practices including spray application hardware, application conditions, and coating / appearance evaluation techniques
· Develop insights into application methods and unmet needs to provide both feedback and hypotheses for coating additive improvements in collaboration with product development
· Create and validate new methods to characterize atomization, film formation, and appearance
· Lead application portion of key coatings development projects through experimental design and generation of coating application data under industrially relevant spray conditions
· Coordinate planning and scheduling of experimental work in conjunction with other application development project leaders
· Communicate technical data through presentations at external customers and conferences, and through publications in peer reviewed journals
· Maintain and/or develop and document appropriate safety procedures to allow for the evaluation of novel coating materials in the application lab
· Develop an understanding of PLC logic, programming, and robotic automation
Qualifications:
· BS Chemical Engineering, Material Science or Mechanical Engineering with 5+ years of experience in robotic paint application preferred
· Must be a hands-on, collaborative problem-solver and a strong trouble shooter
· Experience with conventional gun, electrostatic gun, HVLP, airless, and rotary (bell) atomizers
· Prior experience in application of solvent and waterborne basecoats and clearcoats is desired
· Prefer experience with pumping and fluid delivery equipment for automated paint application
· Experience in PLC and robot programming is a plus
· Experience in planning and executing designed experiments in a research environment
· Strong oral and written communication skills for customer and internal interactions
· Willingness to undertake relatively open-ended challenges with respect to coating application, analytical characterization, and fundamental understanding of the function of additives
· Demonstrated ability to remain current on new and relevant technologies for coating application and characterization and to assess and implement new capabilities as required
· Knowledge of automotive paint processes and upcoming trends a plus
